Jim Hunt would record his noon sportscast so that he could get a break from the morning and evening drive periods. Sometimes he had a problem.

GENERAL FOODS FOO-FOO

From time to time we would woo a new sponsor by making a special sales presentation to them that involved a 'fake' morning show segment with strong sponsor identification. These, of course, were never heard by the listening public but were played to the company brass we were pitching to.
Getting them made was another problem as this segment with Keith and I shows.

J. Carter Hughes

Every morning Keith would receive a phone call from Michael Magee in his character as Fred C. Dobbs or J. Carter Hughes (President of Dominion Gas & Screw). Many of the segments were pre-recorded and Fred/J. Carter (Michael) would have a simulated telephone quality added to his mike to sound like the real thing. Fortunately this was one of the recorded, not live, segments.

Former newsman Brad Franklin (CKEY 64-73 * Newsradio 73-78) sent us this Jim Paulson classic:

"I can remember one snowy December when I was out in the cruiser covering a train wreck and fire out in Pickering. It was shortly before Christmas and I was heading back to the station at about eleven thirty at night and talking on the two-way to Jim Paulson who was on the air. We were just chatting about Christmas, what we would get for our respective wives and so on when suddenly the two-way went dead. About a minute later it came back to life and Jim asked me if I had the station on the car radio. Yes. Had I heard anything in the background while we'd been talking? No. He then asked me if he had been swearing about anything. No. "Thank goodness", he said. "The pot was open and everything we talked about went over the air".
When I got home Wendy was waiting up with a grin on her face. "So that's what you're getting me for Christmas".
