CKEY Promotions

A radio station, or any business for that matter, needs to promote itself to get noticed. When I arrived at CKEY in 1961, the promotions side of the station was handled by Brian Skinner (The Chinner Spinner), a great guy and a very good on-air talent.

Brian left to go to work at CHUM when Harvey Clarke arrived at 247 Davenport Road. Over the next many years we were in his good hands. He was known as the 'one man promotion machine' and others in the business couldn't figure how he did it all by his lonesome (He actually had help from some of the best assistants in the business).

Whether it was The Good Guys, the Silver Dollar Survey, the 59 Hitline, meeting the listeners at the CNE or 'listening to the rainbow', Harve's hand was everywhere.

This is just a brief glimpse at some of the ways CKEY drew listeners.

Some of the logos from the late 50s through the 80s.

In 1963 we gave away a STREETCAR!

When CKEY went Solid Gold, the promotions department cranked up the big machine and we gave away a Gold Mustang!

When you check the full size images for the rules, you might notice it states "Employees of FORD OF CANADA and CKEY RADIO LTD. are not eligible"

Unfortunately it didn't say "and their families". The car went to one of our staff's close relatives.

One of the more successful Solid Gold promos was our bright and shiny SOLID GOLD MUSIC window stickers. Take a look at the prize rules on the larger image.. they sure as heck changed after the Mustang giveaway!

More coming shortly.
